In his senior year he also stuck out a team second best 65 strikeouts in 15 appearances. As a junior he Collected 41 strikeouts in 47.0 innings and recorded a season high five strikeouts four times in 2009. In his sophomore year Pinera compiled a 2.90 ERA and a 6-3 record for Hillsborough CC with 58 strikeouts in 71.1 innings claiming the coveted HCC's Pitcher of the Year honors. During his freshman year he was met with injuries that sidelined him for most of the season. As a high school athlete he once struck out nine batters in succession and had a game where he fanned 12 batters through 5 innings.
