Sandy the Seagull comes from a family of baseball-loving birds. Sandy’s  grandfather grew up on the telephone poles of Brooklyn in the 1950’s. He lived in a small nest on Flatbush Avenue next door to Ebbets Field and every weekend, he would fly out to Coney Island to hang out on the beach  and ride the Cyclone. On game nights, he would fly over to the ballpark and watch the great Brooklyn Dodgers teams, while snacking on the ballpark  leftovers.   Grandpa Seagull was sad when the Dodgers left Brooklyn, but he  kept their memory alive by telling stories to his grandson, Sandy, who loved baseball even more than he did!

Sandy and his grandpa were so thrilled when the Cyclones brought baseball back to Brooklyn that Sandy set up a nest on top of the Parachute Jump so he  could watch all the action.  One day, while the ballpark was being built, Sandy
fell out of the nest. The construction workers nursed him back to health and let him hang around and be their mascot.  When the ballpark was ready for baseball,  Sandy was the obvious choice to become the Cyclones team mascot.

Sandy has gone on to thrill over two million fans, - dancing, racing, cheering, singing, flying, and rooting with all his might for Brooklyn’s favorite team!

During the 2003 off-season renovation on the Parachute Jump, construction workers uncovered a seagull egg hidden in a nest at the landmark’s base.  When they couldn‘t find the egg’s parents, the workers contacted the Cyclones.

Sandy the Seagull swooped in immediately to see if he could help (he knew that birds of a feather flock together).  Sandy remembered his first days inside
an egg, and decided to help whoever was inside.

Sandy took the egg under his wing, and spent weeks caring for it, taking it all over Brooklyn and teaching it about the borough’s culture and history. ..and of
course, about baseball.

On June 29th, of that year, while Sandy was enjoying a Cyclones game with the egg, something started to happen.  The roar of the crowd shook the egg, and the little bird inside wanted to get out and see what all the excitement was about.
Right there, on the field, Pee Wee was hatched!

Since then, the two birds have been inseparable.  Sandy and Pee Wee are a dynamic duo, entertaining kids of all ages every season at the ballpark.
