CYCLONES DROP SERIES FINALE

Despite solid starting pitching, the bullpen could not hold onto the lead, as the Cyclones fell to the Yankees 9-4 in front of 8,776 fans.  Brooklyn went back-and-forth with Staten Island, but the Yankees bats proved to be too much as they put up four runs in the top of the seventh inning and three more in the ninth against the Cyclones' bullpen.  Monday's game was also the last regular season game between the two rivals, with Brooklyn winning the season series 8-6.

RF Kirk Nieuwenhuis notched his fourth multi-hit game in his last six games, going 3-for-4 with an RBI single, a triple, and two runs scored.  DH Jordan Abruzzo went 2-for-4 with a run scored while LF Eric Campbell stroked an RBI double to left field in the fifth inning.  2B J.R. Voyles singled, drove in a run, and scored from the second spot in the order, while 3B Jose Jimenez, CF Sean Ratliff, and C Cesar Cordido all collected hits for the Cyclones.

RHP Jenry Mejia gave up runs in the first and second innings, respectively, before settling down in his sixth start of the season for Brooklyn.  Mejia (pictured, by George Napolitano) worked six innings, allowed two runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts.  LHP Roy Merritt and RHP Erik Turgeon came on in relief in the top of the seventh before giving way to RHP Wendy Rosa, who pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, allowing just a hit with two walks and two strikeouts.  LHP Jim Fuller was the last member of the bullpen to enter the game, giving up a run in the top of the ninth with one strikeout.

The Cyclones (24-23) are off on Tuesday before they travel to Lowell for a three game series.  They return home on Saturday, August 9 at 6:00 pm to take on the Batavia Muckdogs. On Saturday, the first 2,000 fans will receive baseball caps, t-shirts, sweatshirts, bobbleheads, books, and anything else we can think of in our Garage Sale Giveaway.  It will also be Deaf Awareness Night and BIONICLE (R) Battle Night as well.
