'Comeback Clones Sweep Twin Bill

Brooklyn, NY – August 31, 2017 – In Game One of the doubleheader, the Cyclones did something that hadn’t been done in over two years…beat the Lowell Spinners. Brooklyn had lost 11 straight decisions against the Red Sox affiliate, dating back to August 20, 2015, before their 3-2 victory on Thursday evening.

RHP Nicolas Debora (1-4) made the start for Brooklyn and struggled early but settled in to collect his first win of the year. The Spinners jumped on the righthander in the top of the first scoring a pair of runs on four hits to take the early 2-0 lead, but that would be all the offense that Debora would allow.

Meanwhile, the Cyclones chopped away at the Lowell lead in the bottom of the first. Walter Rasquin singled to start the threat and then stole second and third, to tie Angel Pagan’s franchise record with 30 swipes on the year. Wagner Lagrange took advantage of the scoring chance with a line drive single to right field to plate Rasquin and trim the Lowell advantage to 2-1.

After trading zeroes in the second, the Cyclones would take the lead in the bottom of the third. Franklin Correa led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. Rasquin then hit reached on an error to put a pair of runners aboard for Edgardo Fermin. The Brooklyn second baseman then roped a double into the left-centerfield gap to score Correa and put a pair of runners in scoring position. After Lagrange was called out on strikes four out number two, Jose Medina legged out an infield single to push home another run and give Brooklyn a 3-2 lead.

That would be all the offense Brooklyn would need, as Debora settled down and faced the minimum over his final 5.0 innings on the mound. The righthander collected his first win since August 30, 2016 after tossing 6.0 innings, scattering six hits and a walk while striking out four. Trey Cobb took over and tossed a scoreless seventh with a pair of strikeouts to collect the first save of his professional career.

Brooklyn, NY – August 31, 2017 – The Cyclones completed the doubleheader sweep with a thrilling come from behind win in extra innings, topping the Spinners by the score of 3-2. Walter Rasquin connected on an 0-2 offering in the bottom of the eighth and drilled it off of the left field video board for his first home run of the season to complete the dramatic come back.

Brian Campusano made his Cyclones debut on the mound in Game Two and was impressive over his 6.0 innings on the mound. The righthander who was recently promoted from Kingsport allowed just two hits with one walk while striking out six. One of the two hits he surrendered was a solo blast from Nick Hamilton in the top of the fifth to give Lowell a 1-0 edge.

The lead would swell to 2-0 in the seventh when Cannon Chadwick surrendered a triple to Tanner Nishioka, the first batter he faced, and a sac fly to Hamilton to tack on an insurance run for Lowell.

But down to their last three outs, the Comeback ‘Clones went to work. Wagner Lagrange and Jose Medina had back-to-back singles to start the frame and after a ground out from Jose Maria moved both runners up a bag, Jeremy Vasquez laced a double down the right field line to score a pair and knot things up at 2-2.

After Chadwick pitched a 1-2-3 top of the eighth, Rasquin came through in the bottom of the frame to send the Cyclones faithful home happy.

The Cyclones have now won six of their last seven games, following a franchise record 14-game losing streak. Rasquin’s walk off home run was the ninth in franchise history and the first sinee August 22, 2011 when Amauris Valdez gave Brooklyn a similar 3-2 win in eight innings against the Tri-City ValleyCats.
