WILLIAMSPORT CHOPS DOWN CYCLONES, 8-2

WILLIAMSPORT, PA – August 27, 2016 -- The Cyclones late season swoon continued as they fell to the Williamsport Crosscutters by the score of 8-2 on Saturday night. It marked the seventh time in their last nine games that the team has scored two runs or less and Brooklyn dropped to 3-8 since the All-Star Break.

While the Cyclones offense struggled, the Crosscutters came out swinging, taking an early 1-0 lead. Luke Maglich and David Martinelli had back-to-back one out singles that put runners on the corners to start the threat. Darick Hall took advantage of the scoring chance with a sac fly to right field, giving Williamsport their first run of the game.

Their lead would quickly expand to 4-0 thanks to an unearned run in the second, courtesy of throwing error from Blake Tiberi, and a two-run home run off the bat of Darick Hall in the third. For Cyclones starter Gabriel Llanes it was his fourth home run allowed in his last two starts and sixth this season, which is tied for second in the New York-Penn League.

In the top of the fourth inning, Brooklyn was finally able to break through with the help of a pair of Williamsport miscues. Gene Cone started the inning with a single to left field, and advanced to second when left fielder Juan Luis booted the ball. Cone advanced to third on a ground out by Luis Carpio and would come around to score on a passed ball as the Cyclones trimmed their deficit to 4-1.

After trading zeroes in the fifth, Williamsport added a pair of runs in the fifth on a pair of RBI from Hall and Brett Barber to extend their lead to 6-1.

Gabriel Llanes (4-7) had his night come to a close after 6.0 innings, allowing six runs, four earned, on 10 hits. Ty Williams tossed a scoreless seventh for Brooklyn, but Austin McGeorge ran into trouble in the eighth.

After retiring the first two batters he faced, the righthander issued a two-out walk that would start the rally for the ‘Cutters. After a Michael Paez error and back-to-back singles from Luke Maglish and David Martinelli, Williamsport extended their lead to 8-1.

In the ninth, the Cyclones mounted a brief uprising, as Blake Tiberi had a two-out RBI single to plate Gene Cone, making it 8-2, but that is how the game would end.

Brooklyn and Williamsport will square off in the finale of the three-game set on Sunday night at BB & T Ballpark. RHP Merandy Gonzalez will make the start for Brooklyn. The Cyclones will return to MCU Park on Monday to open a three-game set with the Auburn Doubledays. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will receive a Cyclones fleece blanket to keep you warm during the off-season. Tickets start at just $10 and are on sale now at BrooklynCyclones.com, by calling 718-507-TIXX or in person at the MCU Park Box Office.
