BKLYN BATS SILENCED IN 1-0 LOSS

BROOKLYN, NY – July 31, 2016 – There was no magic in the Brooklyn bats on Sunday evening as the Cyclones mounted just two hits and fell to the IronBirds by the score of 1-0 on Sunday afternoon at MCU Park. LHP Thomas Szapucki (1-1) was the hard luck loser, allowing just an unearned run over his 7.0 frames while striking out 10.

The teams traded zeros for five innings until the IronBirds tallied the first run of the game in the top of the fifth on a very odd play. Ronarsy Ledesma struck out on a nasty breaking ball from Szapucki, but Ali Sanchez was unable to keep the ball in front of him, allowing the IronBirds DH to reach. Jaylen Ferguson then lofted a fly ball to right field that Arnaldo Berrios made a diving catch on for the first out of the inning. But while Berrios made the spectacular grab, he also injured his left knee and was unable to relay the ball back to the infield, while Ledesma circled the bases for a three-base sac fly, giving Aberdeen a 1-0 lead.

RHP Adam Atkins and LHP Taylor Henry combined for 2.0 innings of relief, following Szapucki, allowing just one hit, one walk and striking out one for the ‘Clones.

Aberdeen starting pitcher Keegan Akin and the IronBird bullpen were able to keep the Cyclones hitless until the bottom of seventh when Blake Tiberi singled on a line drive to left field to start the frame, but was promptly thrown out stealing second on a failed hit and run.

Brooklyn’s second and last hit of the game would be single on a ground ball from Colby Woodmansee in the top of the ninth, but a comeback was not in the cards today as Pete Alonso grounded into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.

The Cyclones will look to rebound in the second game of the series against Aberdeen tomorrow at 7 P.M. The first 2,000 people in attendance will receive an iPod Amplifier and post-game EVERYONE gets to run the bases. Tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling 718-507-TIXX, logging on to BrooklynCyclones.com or in person at the MCU Park Box Office.
