HAROL'S MONSTER NIGHT DOWNS VERMONT

Burlington, VT – July 28, 2016 – The Cyclones combined some early offense with another terrific start from RHP Harol Gonzalez to win their fifth straight game, topping the Vermont LakeMonsters 5-3.

Facing LHP AJ Puk, the Oakland Athletics’ first round pick in the June draft, Brooklyn came out swinging. With two outs in the top of the first, SS Colby Woodmansee lined a double to left bringing 1B Pete Alonso to the plate. Alonso blooped a single to shallow left to drive in the game’s first run. After RF Jacob Zanon drew a four pitch walk, CF Desmond Lindsay hit an opposite field single to right to bring Alonso across and give Brooklyn a 2-0 lead.

The Cyclones got to Puk again in the third. Woodmansee reached with one out when Vermont C Nick Collins dropped strike three and made an errant throw to first. Alonso made the mistake sting, lining a triple to the fence in right-center for his second RBI of the game. Zanon then tacked on another run with a sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.

Vermont collected its only run off Gonzalez in the third when SS Eli White hit a solo homer to left. The blast was the first homer allowed for Gonzalez in 2016 and ended a 21 inning scoreless streak.

Brooklyn’s ace quickly returned to form, striking out the next two hitters. Gonzalez tossed 7 innings with a career-high 11 strikeouts, giving him a league best 63 strikeouts this season. His best work came against Vermont cleanup hitter and 1B Miguel Mercedes. Mercedes, who leads the league in RBIs and ranks second in home runs, finished the game 0-for-4 with four strikeouts.

Brooklyn added another run in the sixth against LakeMonsters reliever RHP Xavier Altamirano. Lindsay worked a one out walk and C Ali Sanchez lined a double inside the right field line to score Lindsay and make it 5-1. It was Sanchez’s first RBI since July 9.

RHP Gary Cornish entered in the 8th for Brooklyn and ran into trouble when Vermont loaded the bases with one out. The LakeMonsters added two runs on a sacrifice fly from DH Brett Sundee and an RBI single from RF Johnny Rodriguez. But with two outs and the tying runs on base, Cornish struck out CF James Terrell to end the inning. He followed with a perfect ninth inning to seal the win.

The Cyclones’ season-best five game win streak also brings Brooklyn above .500 for the first time in 2016. Tomorrow, RHP Merandy Gonzalez will start against Vermont RHP Heath Bowers. First pitch is slated for 7:05 at Centennial Field.
