BROOKLYN, NY – June 25, 2016 – The Cyclones fell behind early and clawed back late, but the comeback fell just short as they fell the Hudson Valley Renegades by the score of 6-4 on Saturday night at MCU Park. Three Brooklyn relievers combined to toss 5.0 shutout frames, but the damage was done early.

Cyclones starter Joel Huertas quickly found himself in trouble on Saturday night, as the Renegades bats got started early and often. In the top of the first inning, Hudson Valley sent nine men to bat with RBI singles from Garrett Whitley and an RBI groundout from Jose Rojas giving the ‘Gades an early 3-0 lead.

But in the bottom of the second, the Cyclones started their comeback. Blake Tiberi, making his professional debut, walked in his first at-bat and advanced to second on a single from Brandon Brosher. With Darryl Knight at bat, Hudson Valley starter Brock Burke uncorked a wild pitch and moved the pair of Cyclones into scoring position. Knight followed with an RBI groundout, and Hengelbert Rojas hit a sacrifice fly to trim the Cyclones deficit to 3-2.

That’s as close as Brooklyn would get because in the top of the fourth, Hudson Valley took control of the game for good. With Huertas still on the mound, Joseph Astacio singled to start the frame before a hit batter and single from Ryan Boldt loaded the bags with nobody out. The Cyclones hurler was able to bare down though, and struck out the next two batters to find himself on the verge of escaping the jam. But Huertas plunked Nathaniel Lowe with a 1-1 offering to force home a run before Jose Rojas added a two-RBI single that made it 6-2.

That’s how it would stay until the bottom of the ninth as both bullpens traded zeroes. Nabil Crismatt tossed 3.0 perfect innings of relief for Brooklyn before Gary Cornish and Austin McGeorge, both making their professional debuts after being drafted earlier this month, each tossed a shutout frame to give the Cyclones a chance to climb back into the game…and that’s exactly what they did.

In the bottom of the ninth, the Cyclones got things started with back-to-back singles from Rojas and Arnaldo Berrios before Enmanuel Zabala roped a one-out single to right field to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate. Nick Sergakis plated a run with an RBI groundout that made it 6-3 with runners on the corners. Down to their last out, Colby Woodmansee drilled a line drive single that chased Berrios home, and when rigthfielder Angel Perez fired to third in hopes of gunning down Sergakis trying to advance, Woodmansee scampered to second base, putting the tying run in scoring position. But that is where they would stay, as Noel Rodriguez was summoned from the bullpen and retired Blake Tiberi for the final out of the game.

The Cyclones return to action tomorrow afternoon for the middle game of three against the Renegades. It’s a Sunday FunDay, so that means pre-game catches on the field and post-game kids run the bases. The first 2,000 fans in attendance will also receive a 1986 Championship Ring Desk Display. In addition, Jose Reyes will be back in the Mets organization, suiting up for the Cyclones as he begins his progression back to Queens. Tickets are still available by calling 718-507-TIXX, logging on to or in person at the MCU Park Box Office.
