CANELON A FORCE ON THE MOUND ON STAR WARS NIGHT

The force was with the Cyclones on Star Wars night at MCU Park. Behind a strong effort from lefty Kevin Canelon, more solid relief pitching and a two-run single from Pedro Perez, Brooklyn ousted the Aberdeen IronBirds by a 2-1 score and sent 7,015 fans home happy from Coney Island. The win marks the seventh straight at home for a Cyclones team that now stands at 15-6 on the season.

Brooklyn did their damage in the second inning, beginning with cleanup hitter David Thompson drawing a walk. A single from Brandon Brosher put runners at first and second with nobody out. As Zach Mathieu struck out swinging for the first out, Thompson and Brosher pulled off a double steal and leaving the Cyclones with men on second and third with just one out. Oswald Caraballo then hit a line drive that Aberdeen second baseman Drew Turbin stabbed with a slick diving catch. The stage was then set with two outs for Perez, who drilled a fastball off the left field fence for a single, driving in Brooklyn’s only two runs of the contest.

After facing the minimum through the first three innings, Canelon made his only mistake of the game in the fourth when he served up a solo home run to Turbin. The Brooklyn lead was cut in half but Tom Gamboa’s left hander remained in control of the game and kept pounding the strike zone. In total, Canelon was brilliant and would not surrender another hit for the rest of his outing. He completed 6.1 innings, allowed just two hits and one run while striking out four. Left-hander Carlos Valdez came on in the seventh to get the final two outs before tossing a scoreless eighth inning. Alex Palsha, who has yet to give up a run this season, then nailed it down with a perfect ninth inning for his fifth save of the season.

The Cyclones improved their record to 11-2 when scoring first and remains an undefeated 11-0 when leading after the seventh inning. All in all, the relief pitching has been a huge strength for a Brooklyn team that now boasts a 1.05 ERA through the first 21 games of the season. The Cyclones will go for their eighth straight home win on Sunday in the second of a three game series with the Aberdeen IronBirds. First pitch is set for 5:00 PM as right-hander Tyler Badamo (1-1, 1.35) takes the hill for Brooklyn. It is also Minions Night at MCU Park where fans can enjoy special guest appearances from the minions themselves and watch them kick off the night throwing the game's first pitch. Tickets start at just $10 and are on sale now by calling 718-507-TIXX, visiting the MCU Park Box Office or right here at BrooklynCyclones.com.
