Staten Island, NY – July 19th – Richie Rodriguez hit a sacrifice fly to left field in the 15th inning to break a 0-0 tie and lead the Cyclones to a 1-0 victory over the Staten Island Yankees on Thursday night.
Dimas Ponce began the inning with a double to right before Jonathan Clark singled on a bunt ground ball to third. Ponce moved to third base on the play and came home thanks to Rodriguez's sac fly to left field.
Brooklyn starting pitcher Gabriel Ynoa threw 6.0 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks. He struck out three batters. Beck Wheeler and Tim Peterson combined for three perfect innings of relief with seven strikeouts.
The win was credited to Ernesto Yanez (1-0), who pitched to just one batter in the 14th. With a runner at third and two outs, Yanez got Matt Snyder to fly out to center field to escape the inning. Tyler Vanderheiden replaced Yanez on the mound in the 15th inning, and picked up his sixth save of the season.
Rosario walked to begin the bottom of the 15th before Vanderheiden got Exicardo Cayones to strikeout swinging. Vanderheiden then hit Matthew Duran with a pitch to put runners on first and second. Up next, Jamiel Orozco hit a ground ball to first base. Jayce Boyd threw over to shortstop Evans for the first out, and Evans then threw home where catcher Nelfi Zapata tagged out Rosario in a collision at the plate. The double play ended the game to gave the Cyclones a 1-0 win.
Staten Island was held to just four hits. Outfielder Taylor Dugas led off the bottom of the first inning with a line drive double to left field; and that was the only hit the Yankees would manage until the 10th frame when Jose Rosario reached on a bunt single. The Baby Bombers left nine men on base and were 0-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
Jonathan Clark led the Cyclones with three hits (including a double), while Phillip Evans, Jayce Boyd, and Dimas Ponce also had multi-hit games. However, Brooklyn was 1-for-14 with runners in scoring position, and left 11 men on base.
