CYCLONES FIGHT OFF RAIN AND SPIKES IN 3-2 WIN

University Park, PA – July 15 – After waiting out a rain delay of an hour and 59 minutes, the Cyclones fought off the rain and the State College Spikes for a 3-2 victory at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park in State College, PA. Alex Sanchez went 3-4 and plated what proved to be the game winning run with an RBI single.

After two scoreless innings, the Cyclones drew first blood with a pair of runs in the top of the third. Back-to-back doubles from Brandon Nimmo and Jonathan Clark started the frame and gave the Cyclones a 1-0 lead. After a groundout by Juan Gamboa moved Clark into scoring position, Dimas Ponce scored the speedy outfielder with a sacrifice fly to push the Cyclones advantage to 2-0.

After cruising through the first three innings, Brooklyn starter Luis Cessa ran into his first trouble spot in the fourth inning. State College centerfielder Barrett Barnes led off the bottom of the fourth with a solo shot to left field to slice the Brooklyn lead in half, 2-1.

The Cyclones would respond quickly though, pushing their lead back to a pair in their next turn at –bat. Ponce started the threat with a booming double to left field and eventually came around to score on a line drive single by Alex Sanchez to push the Brooklyn lead back to two runs at 3-1.

The see-saw scoring would continue in the sixth with State College mounting a two-out rally. After Cessa retired the first two batters in the inning, Jacob Stallings ripped a double to right field before coming around to score on an RBI single from Samuel Gonzalez to trim the Brooklyn lead to 3-2.

That would be Cessa’s last inning of work, finishing the night with 6.0 innings of work, allowing two runs on six hits while walking two and striking out a pair. He would hand the ball over to Matt Bowman who pitched a career-high 3.0 scoreless innings of relief to close out the win and collect his second save of the year.

The Cyclones will look to close out a three-game sweep tomorrow evening at 7:05 pm. Hansel Robles (1-1, 2.57) will toe the rubber for Brooklyn. The Cyclones will then return home to MCU Park on Tuesday for the first Throwback T-Shirt Tuesday of the season when they take on the Renegades. The first 3,000 fans in attendance will receive an Ike Davis T-Shirt jersey courtesy of St. Francis College. It will also be medieval times night, as well as NYPD night. Tickets start at just $9 and are on sale by calling 718-507-TIXX, in person at the MCU Park box office or at BrooklynCyclones.com
