CYCLONES VICTORIOUS IN ABERDEEN, WIN 7-1

Aberdeen, MD – June 23rd – After dropping two straight games, the Cyclones left Aberdeen on Saturday night with a 7-1 victory over the Ironbirds.

Starting pitcher Rainy Lara (1-0) earned the win, going five strong innings and allowing no runs off two hits. He walked two and struck out four batters. Aberdeen starter Cameron Coffey took the loss for the Ironbirds as he surrendered six earned runs off seven Brooklyn hits in 4.2 innings of work.

Brooklyn jumped to an early 4-0 lead, batting around in the second inning. Left fielder Stefan Sabol hit a one-out line drive single to center to get things started. Right fielder Eudy Pina then popped out to Aberdeen pitcher Coffey before catcher Jeffrey Glenn walked. A single off the bat of third baseman Dimas Ponce scored Sabol, and a Richie Rodriguez double plated Glenn. Center fielder Brandon Nimmo hit a line drive two-run single to left, and shortstop Phillip Evans reached on a throwing error by Aberdeen third baseman Torsten Boss; however, first baseman Alex Sanchez grounded out to the shortstop to end the inning.

The Cyclones added two more runs in the fifth off a Kevin Plawecki two-run home run to left field. Sanchez, who scored on the play, had reached first on a single. The home run was the first of Plawecki’s professional career.

Brooklyn pitching held the Ironbirds scoreless until the bottom of the seventh. DH Roberto Ortiz led off the inning with a double to left and then scored on an RBI single by catcher Pedro Perez. Perez advanced to second on a groundout by center fielder Anthony Vega, but was unable to score as left fielder Will Howard struck out swinging and a fly out to center by second baseman Jerome Pena ended the inning.

The Cyclones added one last run to the board in the eighth. After Rodriguez grounded out and Nimmo flied out to center, Evans hit his second home run of the year.

Brooklyn pitcher Juan Urbina gave up one earned run over three innings of relief, and David Wynn threw a perfect ninth to end the game.

The Cyclones will face the Ironbirds again tomorrow, Sunday, June 24, in Aberdeen at 5:35 PM. The team will return home to MCU Park on Monday, June 25th to take on the Hudson Valley Renegades at 7:00 PM.
