FRIDAY NIGHT MUSIC SERIES AT MCU PARK

This season, MCU Park will be a great venue not only for baseball, but also live music. With Williamsburg Night, being held on July 5, and the new Friday Night Music Series, beginning on June 29, fans can rock and jam out to some awesome musical performers before, after, and even during the Cyclones home games.

Leading off the Friday Night Music Series is the Sonnet Man Devon Glover, who will rap inside the gallery/bar on June 29. Featured on the Today Show, the Sonnet Man sets Shakespeare’s love sonnets to hip hop and features brilliant rap artist Devon Glover. Conceived and produced by Broadway playwright Arje Shaw, the Sonnet Man makes Shakespeare fun and exciting for young audiences, introducing them to classical literature and setting a foundation for appreciation of the arts.

That same night DeeJay K.O. will be outside the front entrance gate and Breakatronz – a break dancing group – will perform before the game and between innings. The NY Daily News says, “It is physically impossible to walk past the dance group Breakatronz without stopping to watch them perform.” Consisting of five members, these breakdancers combine power with footwork, and each member has a singular yet complementary skill set.  In addition, MC Chris Wise will be performing a 90 second hip hop verse during the game, that will tie together Brooklyn, Baseball, & Hip Hop

On July 6, the Cyclones will host adult contemporary rock artist John Schmitt in the gallery/bar and Irish and classic rock singer and guitarist John Malone in the picnic area.

The following week, on July 20, musicians from the FDNY will perform before the game in the gallery/bar, and rock singer and acoustic guitarist Ramzi will be live in the picnic area. While his folk-rock-pop draws comparisons to other successful singer-songwriters such as John Mayer and Jason Mraz, Ramzi’s stories are most definitely his own. And though the catchy melodies and accomplished guitar work will impress, Ramzi is a storyteller first and foremost, and what really stands out is how quickly listeners are drawn in.

Fans can chill out to some cool jazz on Reader Appreciation Night, to be held on August 3. Jazz musician Andrew Why will fill the gallery/bar with his tunes, while the Shake, Rattle & Roll Pianos will provide entertainment in the picnic area.

Malone and Schmitt will return to MCU Park for a second performance on August 10 for 1st Responder Night. And the Friday Night Music Series will wrap up on August 31 with the pop/rock band Holiday and the Tom Finn jazz trio. Holiday is a two-piece act of twin brothers Nick and Steve, who describe their sound as “passionate music in an exclusive relationship with poetry.” Finn, an alto saxophonist from Old Chatham, NY, has performed at such city venues as Carnegie Hall, Jazz at Lincoln Center, Symphony Space, The Village Vanguard, and The Blue Note.

But that’s not all MCU Park has in store! On Thursday, July 5, the Cyclones will host Vinny Holden – of the rock/alternative/pop punk band Breaking Even – for Williamsburg Night. The band’s sound is similar to that of Blink-182, Taking Back Sunday, Brand New, and My Chemical Romance.

All musical performances will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m. so make sure you get to the ballpark early!
