September 4th -- Brooklyn, NY -- The Brooklyn Cyclones (45-29) put the finishing touches on their successful 2011 regular season campaign by completing a three-game sweep of the Staten Island Yankees (45-28) with a 7-4 win on Sunday evening at home. The teams will see each other shortly as they will meet again in the New York-Penn League Playoffs, which begin at MCU Park on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

The Baby Bombers jumped out to an early lead, but were only able to protect it for three innings. Mason Williams lead off the ballgame with a single to left and immediately stole second base on the first pitch of the next at-bat. Williams scored with ease after Cito Culver ripped a sharp grounder just out of the reach of a diving Richard Lucas for a quick 1-0 lead. After starting pitcher Carlos Vazquez induced a strikeout, Tyler Austin brought home Cito Culver with a line drive double into the gap in left-center. With two outs, Angelo Gumbs kept the inning alive with a single to center that plated Austin from second for their third run. However, a strikeout of Casey Stevenson ended the frame.

In the bottom of the first, the Cyclones narrowed the deficit to two runs with an RBI-single by Richard Lucas that scored Charley Thurber.

Lucas continued his sweet-swinging ways with another RBI-single in the bottom of the third, scoring Danny Muno, who led the inning off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt.

With the Brooklyn trailing, 3-2, Staten Island padded their lead when Zachary Wilson launched a solo homerun that sailed well pass the wall in left in the top of the fourth.

However, the Brooklyn bats were relentlessness as they strung together a four-run fourth inning to overtake the lead. With runners on the corners and one out, Danny Muno extended his hitting streak to 13 games in the bottom of the fourth with an RBI single on a line drive to right. Two more runs scored on a pair of wild pitches by Dustin Hobbs before Javier Rodriguez gave Brooklyn a two-run lead with a sacrifice fly to right.

The Cyclones’ bullpen held the Yankee bats in check, holding them scoreless over the last five innings. Righthander Rafael Montero (1-0, 3.60) picked up the win after tossing 4.0 innings of one-run ball and striking out four.

However, the ‘pen ran into trouble in the top of the eighth. With runners on the corners and two outs, T.J. Chism was brought on in favor of fellow lefthander Jeremy Gould and struck out Reymond Nunez looking to squash any thoughts of a Staten Island comeback.

Travis Taijeron gave the Cyclones a three-run cushion in the bottom of the eighth with his team-leading ninth homerun on a solo blast to left field. Taijeron also led the team in RBI with 44, edging Javier Rodriguez who totaled 43 runs batted in.

Chism allowed a single and double in the top of the ninth but retired the side to finish the regular season with a team-leading six saves. The southpaw has allowed just one earned run in his last ten outings.

By going 1-for-2 tonight, Muno finished with a batting average of .355, which was also tops in the NYPL – Staten Island outfielder Mason Williams was second at .349.

Marco Camarena gets the ball in the opener of the New York-Penn League Playoffs. The righthander finished the regular with a 3-3 mark and 3.13 ERA in 13 starts.
