CARL-OH SO CLOSE! VAZQUEZ AND BK TOSS ONE HITTER

August 30th – Lowell, MA --The Brooklyn Cyclones were five outs away from making history on Tuesday evening, but instead of a no-hitter, they had to settle for a 3-0 shutout victory and moved one game closer to a playoff birth. Carlos Vazquez (4-2) allowed only one walk through his 6.0 innings of work and Lowell’s lone hit came with one out in the bottom of the eighth inning.

Vazquez retired the first 12 Spinners in order to start the game for the Cyclones, but Luis Diaz (4-4) was just as sharp for Lowell keeping Brooklyn scoreless through the first four innings of the game. But in the fifth the Cyclones were finally able to break through thanks to a solo shot from catcher Xorge Carrillo to give the Cyclones a 1-0 edge heading into the bottom of the fifth.

In the lower half of the frame, Carlos Vazquez walked Adalberto Ibarra to give Lowell their first base runner of the game, but the southpaw was able to retire the next two batters to keep the Spinners scoreless.

Jack Leathersich, who was making a homecoming after attending UMass Lowell, came out of the bullpen for the Cyclones and struck out the side in the seventh. In the eight, the lefthander retired the first batter he faced before Jose Garcia broke up the Brooklyn no-hit bid with a single, but Leathersich made quick work of the next two batters he faced to send the game into the ninth with Brooklyn still leading 1-0.

In their last at-bat, Brooklyn would tack on some insurance runs. Cole Frenzel started the rally with a single and Brian Harrison followed suit with a single of his own to put a pair of runners on for Travis Taijeron. Taijeron, as he has done countless times this season, came through in the clutch with a booming double to right field, scoring both runners to push the Brooklyn advantage to 3-0.

Todd Weldon closed out the one-hit bid with a scoreless ninth inning to collect his fifth save of the season for the Cyclones.

The Cyclones, who are currently tied with the Williamsport Crosscutters for the NYPL Wild Card lead, take on the Spinners two more times before returning to MCU Park on Friday for a three-game set against the Staten Island Yankees. Don’t miss your chance to see the Cyclones take on their cross-bridge rivals with the playoffs on the line this weekend.
