July 6th -- Brooklyn, NY --
The Brooklyn Cyclones (11-9) were topped by the Vermont Lake Monsters (12-6) by a score of 5-2 on Wednesday night. Starter Marco Camarena (1-1) tossed 5.0 innings and gave up just one earned run, but was tagged with his first loss of 2011. Jose Macias (2-2) picked up the win for Vermont. Charley Thurber collected his third consecutive multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a run scored. Travis Taijeron doubled twice, giving him three doubles in his last two games.

The Lake Monsters threatened early in the top of the first, loading the bases with just one out. Vermont brought one runner around to score on a line drive to right field, but Camarena gathered himself, inducing a fly out and a strikeout to avoid further damage.

Vermont doubled their lead in the fourth inning on a fielding error in the outfield. After the lead-off batter bunted his way onto first base, he came around to score on a line drive that was misplayed by the left fielder.

Down 2-0 in the bottom of the frame, the Cyclones strung together two singles and a walk to load the bases with two outs, but could not plate a run.

The Lake Monsters loaded the bases again in the sixth inning, but reliever Randy Fontanez was able to work out of the jam. After allowing two walks and a single, the righthander recorded the final out of the inning on a strikeout.

In the following inning, the Lake Monsters extended their lead to five runs off of the Cyclones bullpen. Vermont collected four singles and took advantage of a Brooklyn throwing error and wild pitch en route to taking a 5-0 lead. Catcher Nelfi Zapata gunned down a would-be base stealer at second to record the final out of the inning.

With runners on first and second in the bottom of the frame, Zapata smoked a one-hopper to the left side that the third baseman could not field cleanly. The ensuing throw from the third baseman was off-line, allowing all Brooklyn base runners to reach safely. With the bases loaded, Carlos Leyva hit into what appeared to be a groundball-double play, but the grounder was misfielded by the second baseman and Vermont had to settle for a force out at second base. As a result, Thurber came around to score, cutting the Lake Monsters’ lead to four runs.

Entering the bottom of the eighth inning trailing 5-1, Javier Rodriguez led-off with a single up the middle, but Vermont recorded three outs in a row to retire Brooklyn.

The Cyclones offense would not go down quietly, however. Taijeron mashed his second double of the game and advanced to third on Leyva’s infield single, giving Brooklyn runners on the corners. With two outs, Jonathan Clark worked himself into a 1-2 count, but he fouled off three pitches before singling to right field to drive in Taijeron and keep the Cyclones’ hopes alive. The next batter, Ismael Tijerina, smoked a line drive, but directly at the third baseman. The Vermont third baseman squeezed the liner for the final out of the game.

Brooklyn will return to action against Vermont tomorrow, Thursday, July 7 at 7 p.m. Eduardo Aldama (1-1) will oppose Kurt Wunderlich (0-2). Tomorrow’s game marks the first Jersday Thursday of 2011!
