'Clones Mauled by Bears, 8-3

Morgantown, WV – August 10, 2017 – Brooklyn dropped the rubber match of a three-game series with the West Virginia Black Bears on Thursday night by the score of 8-3. Three Cyclones errors led to four unearned runs on the night and Jose Carlos Medina (1-5) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs, but only one earned, on seven hits over his 4.0 innings on the mound.  Offensively, Jeremy Vasquez was the lone bright spot with a 2-for-3 effort with a pair of doubles, run scored and RBI.

After a scoreless first inning, the Cyclones drew first blood in the top of the second. 1B Jeremy Vasquez continued the scorching start to his Cyclones career, with a one out double, and would later score on a double off the bat of Jose Maria that gave Brooklyn the early 1-0 edge.

But the lead would be short-lived, as West Virginia took control of the game in the bottom of the third…without hitting a ball out of the infield. Robbie Glendinning got things started with a sharply hit single that hit off of Medina’s calf and left him a bit hobbled. After a few minutes delay, Julio De La Cruz took advantage the hobbled hurler with a bunt single, but Glendinning was thrown out trying to advance to third for the first out of the frame. Jared Oliva then reached on an error from Franklin Correa and Austin Meadows followed with another infield single to load the bases. Deon Stafford then hit a ground ball that was fielded by Correa, and his throw to second base eluded Walter Rasquin and trickled into centerfield allowing all three runs to score and gave the Black Bears a 3-1 lead.

West Virginia added a run in the fourth on a sac fly from De La Cruz and four more in the fifth to push their advantage to 8-1. RHP Cannon Chadwick, who came into the game having allowed just one run in 17.2 innings, was tagged with all four runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Cyclones tacked on single runs in the eighth, when Correa came home while Leon Byrd was thrown out stealing second, and the ninth on a sac fly from Vasquez to make the final score 8-3.

The Cyclones will now head to Hudson Valley for a three-game series with the Renegades before the All-Star Break on Monday and Tuesday. LHP David Peterson, the Mets first round selection in the 2017 MLB Draft, will make the start for Brooklyn on Friday night.
