CYCLONES LASSO A WIN ON COUNTRY MUSIC NIGHT

CYCLONES LASSO A WIN ON COUNTRY MUSIC NIGHT

The Cyclones ended an eight game losing skid Saturday night, as they faced the Williamsport Crosscutters for the first time this season and picked up an 8-4 victory. The Mets 2014 first round pick, Michael Conforto, made his professional debut, batting clean up as the designated hitter for Brooklyn and Octavio Acosta threw another strong game for the Cyclones, pitching eight innings and striking out seven.

After five scoreless innings, Williamsport would be the team to pick up the first run of the game.To lead off the top of the sixth innings, Robinson Torres hits a ball to Amed Rosario at short. However, Rosario couldn’t transfer the ball, which allowed Torres to reach base on an error. Torres made his way around the bases, after stealing second and reaching third on a passed ball. A single by Chase Harris drove in the run to give the Crosscutters a 1-0 lead. That would be all of the damage Williamsport could manage, as Adrian Abreu threw out two base runners from behind the plate that attempted to steal second.

The Cyclones answered back in the bottom half of the sixth, scoring a season high of six runs in one inning. Michael Conforto started things off by picking up his first professional hit on a line drive single to right field. Michael Katz followed with a single up the middle and Tyler Moore picked up his second hit of the night after reaching first safely on a bunt hit of Alejandro Arteaga. With bases loaded and no one out, Michael Bernal singled to right field on the first pitch he saw, which drove in two runs.

Williamsport made a pitching change and bought in Keivy Rojas to relieve Arteaga. Tucker Tharp would be the first batter Rojas faced and Tharp hit a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third. With Tomas Nido at the plate as a pinch runner for Dimas Ponce, Rojas throws a wild pitch, allowing Moore to score from third and Bernal to move to third. Nido walked and Anthony Chavez pinch ran for at first. The next batter, Adrian Abreu launched a three run homerun that bounced off the video board in left field to extend the lead. The umpires initially called the hit a double, but after further consideration, they called it a homerun. The Cyclones were on top 6-1.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Cyclones tacked two more runs onto the board. Michael Bernal walked and Tharp singled to right. However, on a throwing error by Derek Campbell, Bernal scored and Tharp advanced to second. Adrian Abreu got on base with an infield hit and with a pick off attempt gone wrong for Williamsport, Tharp scored the Cyclones eighth run.

The Crosscutters did not stop fighting until the end, as they added three more runs in the top of the ninth. Luis Mateo came in to close out the game for the Cyclones, but gave up two singles and a three run homerun to Rhys Hoskins. The game ended with a final score of 8-4, Cyclones.

The Cyclones and Crosscutters will play the second game of the series on Superhero Sunday at 5 PM. For tickets to Sunday evening’s game or any other day, you can call 718-507-TIXX, visit the MCU Park Box Office or log onto Brooklyncyclones.com.
