SANTANA AND CYCLONES BLANK AUBURN, 8-0

Brooklyn, NY – August 5th – Johan Santana threw 3.0 scoreless innings in his rehab start, allowing just one hit, one walk, and striking out three in a 8-0 Cyclones victory over the Auburn Doubledays.

Santana gave up just the one hit to Auburn left fielder Mike McQuillan in the second. He pitched a perfect first inning, striking out two of the three batters he faced.

In the bottom half of the frame, Brooklyn put three runs on the board. Brandon Nimmo led things off, taking first after getting hit by a pitch. Phillip Evans then walked before Jayce Boyd grounded out to third. With Nimmo and Evans now both in scoring position, Kevin Plawecki singled to centerfield, giving the Cyclones a 2-0 lead. Plawecki then advanced to second on a throwing error by center fielder Narciso Mesa, and crossed the plate when Stefan Sabol doubled to left. Up next, Nelfi Zapata reached on a missed catch error by first baseman Estarlin Martinez, but the inning was ended after Eudy Pina and Juan Gamboa both struck out swinging.

The Cyclones scored another three runs in the second. Dimas Ponce began the inning, reaching base on a fielding error by third baseman Khayyan Norfork. Then, with Brandon Nimmo batting, another Auburn error – this time a throwing error by Brett Mooneyham on a pickoff attempt – moved Ponce to second. After Nimmo was called out on strikes, Evans homered on a fly ball to left to give Brooklyn a five-run lead.

But the inning wasn’t done yet, and neither were the Cyclones. Jayce Boyd walked and advanced to second on a line drive single off the bat of Plawecki. He crossed the plate on a two-out double by Nelfi Zapata, which knocked Auburn starting pitcher Brett Mooneyham from the game.

After giving up a walk and a hit in the second, Santana pitched a perfect third before being replaced on the mound by Julian Hilario. Hilario earned the win, going 5.0 scoreless innings with three hits, three walks, and three strikeouts.

The Cyclones extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth. A pair of singles sandwiched a double by Plawecki to score Boyd. Sabol then walked to load the bases. After Pina struck out for the third time of the night, Gamboa hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring home Plawecki and make it 8-0.

After the eighth inning the game was called due to rain.

The Cyclones will complete their three-game series against the Auburn Doubledays tomorrow, Monday, August 6th at MCU Park. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 AM. Tickets are available now by visiting the MCU box office, calling 718-507-TIXX, or CLICKING HERE.
